Here is a quick summary of the items listed in Soundings, July/August 2008 Edition. In order to avoid excessive coverage of items which may not be of interest to all members, these issues are only summarised in brief and further details can be obtained from the Secretary.

River Thames set for £6.3 m upgrade

The River Thames is getting a £6.3 million upgrade this year with 18 locks benefiting from major repairs and improvements and the remaining 27 from maintenance work. From St John’s Lock in Gloucestershire to Teddington on the outskirts of London, the Environment Agency is improving existing layby’s, repairing and rebuilding banks, building a new canoe portage and generally refurbishing locks.  The major works start on 1 September 2008 at Clifton Lock and continue to the end of March 2009. Other improvements include out of hours public power installation at up to seven more locks.

The largest projects are at Grafton, Clifton and Cookham locks, where £600,000 is being spent on each project. Grafton lock will benefit from a major refurbishment, where the crumbling face of the lock walls will be removed and new reinforced lock walls created. A new canoe portage will be added and work will also stabilise the banks which are collapsing because of erosion.  Clifton and Cookham locks will also have major bank protection work.
